step 1: Pull Tomatoes Before Frost
When frost is forecast, pull up whole tomato vines. Hang them upside down from a hook or nail in a cool spot that won’t freeze, such as a sun porch or garage. A temperature of 60 to 70 degrees is perfect.
step 2: Continue to Pick Ripe Tomatoes for Weeks
The tomatoes on the vine will continue to ripen for weeks. Pick them every couple of days, just as you did when they were in the garden. After a few weeks, the only tomatoes left on the plant will be too green to ripen. When they stop ripening, add the plant to the compost pile.
